Description
This waistcoat headstock template is a twist on our more classic headstock design. It moves the bulk closer to the nut and looks a little more “vintage”. Sized for cigar box guitars, our waistcoat headstock template design sits well with a wooden cigar box (such as a Partagas) or with a paper-wrapped cigar box with a traditional design (such as a Romeo y Julieta).
Made from clear acrylic, you can still see your workpiece with the template in place. We use 5mm thick acrylic, so you can use it with a template-cutting router bit with bearing.
The template is based on the standard 35mm width typically used for cigar box guitars. With a bit of finagling it also works fine on necks that are a bit narrower or wider than this.
It includes markings for positioning tuners, whether you are building a 3 string or a 4 string cigar box guitar. If you’re making a 3 string, it also caters for situations where you might be using 2L and 1R tuners, or 1L and 2R tuners. The centre of the tuner position is a 2mm diameter hole. Just wide enough to push a bradawl through to mark the headstock, but tight enough to ensure accuracy.
Finally, the template includes a string spacing guide for marking the positions of the strings at the nut. Again, there are markings for 3 or 4 string guitars.
